It hardly seems plausible that it was 18 years ago that Leela James released her ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ album. We rinsed that record back in the day. We’re not sure why but somehow we lost track of Leela until earlier this year when we stumbled across a dance remix of her track ‘Reach For It’. Turns out that Leela has a brand new album and it’s the epitome of the RnB we want to hear in 2023. Those jazz and blues influences remain in tact yet are blended so smoothly with a modern production. Crucially the songs on ‘Thought U Knew’ are STRONG – have a listen to ‘Right Back In It’ as exhibit A. That husky soul voice is just the lushest and hasn’t lost any of its richness. Another track which grooves along with a funky and brassy swagger is ‘Satisfied’. Leela we are so pleased you are still making such fine music and even happier that we’ve reconnected with your work. ‘Thought U Knew’ is out now.
