Sandor Gavin & ELYXIR – Feels Like Magic

30 Sep

Emerging Aussie synthwave princess ELYXIR teams with NYC’s Sandor Gavin for ‘Feels Like Magic’. So much about this gives us early Madonna vibes – right down to ELYXIR’s vocal and the almost but not quite hi-NRG (Evelyn Thomas anyone?) synths and production.

Valentina Ploy – Drunk Sleeping In Taxis

30 Sep

Picked this one off of the New Music Friday AU/NZ playlist (it’s already Friday there, as we type this in the UK at 7.30pm on Thursday night!) based upon the title. What an uncomplicated and beautiful pop song this is and just listen to that gorgeous voice. Valentina we think you have a monster size hit on your hands with ‘Drunk Sleeping In Taxis’.

Genes – Friendzone

30 Sep

Bop after bop after bop. That’s what Genes is doing right now. The “ooh ooh ee ooh” bit of ‘Friendzone’ is equal part Carly Rae/Kylie and that’s the quality Genes is pulling off on this run of singles she’s delivered. An effortless and gimmickless vocal delivery and big bubblicious pop beats.

Florian – Seventeen

30 Sep

We’ve been fans of Florian for some time and were thrilled when she started releasing music again this year (‘Yours & Mine’ is a contender for single of the year). Her latest track ‘Seventeen’ sees her going full out Stevie Nicks both vocally and on the production – this could be a track from one of Stevie’s polished but edgy 80s pop solo records. That means it’s very good.

WiKETT – Rainbow Slush

29 Sep

Not gonna lie, we were attracted by the song title. We stuck around after finding that ‘Rainbow Slush’ is some funked up yet dreamy nu disco courtesy of WiKETT from Lille in France. We say bonjour and merci for this absolutely beauty of a track.

Annie Bass – Crazy

29 Sep

Hot on the heels of the breathtaking ‘Step Aside’, Annie Bass returns with another corker. ‘Crazy’ blends the club rhythms of Anabel Englund with Sade’s sophistipop and the emotronica of James Blake. Pure class.

Peakes – Day & Age

29 Sep

‘Peripheral Figures’ is the forthcoming album from Peakes. To announce it in style they have shared the ripping indie synth popper ‘Day & Age’. Ladytron, Chvrches and Metric all in the mix here. Loving the full on synth wig out at the back end.

Jupiter Winter – Seen

28 Sep

One of our fave male/female duos have returned with a soaring neon soaked pop burst. Friends and collaborators of The Midnight, Jupiter Winter have a fistful of polished power pop tunes in their arsenal. ‘Seen’ is not quite synthwave and would sit well alongside classic 80s track ‘Body Rock’ by Maria Vidal.

Uffie – Cool

28 Sep

Cult pop icon Uffie (she of ‘Pop The Glock’ fame) is back with a new single and a new label. It’s not just any imprint, Uffie is signed to none other than Toro Y Moi’s Company Records. ‘Cool’ is a perky indie bop with Uffie’s trademark sweet as bubblegum vocal over a funky little groove.

Fine Place – This New Heaven

28 Sep

Frankie Rose (loved her album ‘Interstellar’) has a new project with Matthew Hord – please welcome Fine Place to Teases & Dares. The title track from their forthcoming release on Night School Records is ‘This New Heaven’. The production is lush and will appeal to fans of The Cocteau Twins, Client and Metric at their most chilled out. There’s a bloomin’ gorgeous Dinked Edition available to pre-order now. On top of all that the single artwork manages to look exactly as the music sounds.
