Ronya – Flame

30 Dec

This is not new but it’s new to me thanks to another year end poll in which I noticed it. I can now add Finland’s Ronya to my growing army of awesome Scandi-ladies. ‘Flame’ is a bit of a stormer – strong vocal, big beats – and distinctly Scandinavian. The video comes with a bit of a warning – scenes won’t be suitable for all!

HOLYCHILD – Running Behind

30 Dec

I do love me a boy/girl duo and my latest find is HOLYCHILD. On ‘Running Behind’ there’s a shade of TuneYards’ ‘Water Fountain’, a dash of Sleigh Bells and more than a hint of Gwen’s ‘Hollaback Girl’. Those ingredients make for quite a tasty little year-end treat.

Chela – Handful Of Gold

29 Dec

I loved Chela’s work with fellow Aussies Clubfeet and have similarly enjoyed her solo output. This recent track took a bit longer to grow on me but I am there now!

Sofi de la Torre – Vermillion

29 Dec

Here’s a track I found via one of the recent best of the year lists published by a poster on Popjustice. I hadn’t heard of Sofi but fell in love with this instantly and can’t believe I wasn’t aware of it previously. It starts off as a electronic pop ballad but there is a pulsing synth heart which forms an almost non-lyrical chorus. Love the structure.

The Staves – Blood I Bled

29 Dec

This has strings, horns, harmonies to die for – just about everything that a gorgeous bit of indie folk should have. These siblings have been working with Bon Iver on their soon to be released album which is just a mouth watering prospect. Here’s the epic Blood I Bled.

Ana-Tole x Jonah Christian – Turn

21 Dec

Kick Kick Snare featured cellist and trombonist Ana-Tole in their best new artists feature recently. Justifiably so. Thanks to the KKS guys I was signposted to a wonderful Bandcamp-only long form EP by Ana-Tole which is just stunning. It’s a blend of almost classical sounding electronics with a very cinematic, dramatic feel. Hard to define but incredibly effortless to listen to. Definitely one to watch in 2015.

Lion Babe – Treat Me Like Fire

21 Dec

Lion Babe just released their Childish Gambino-featuring debut EP in the UK and it includes this track which launched them yonks ago but remains as fresh as a daisy. The musical equivalent of an open log burning fire this song does exactly what it says on the tin – it will actually make you feel warmer by listening to it! Oh and the singer is Vanessa Williams’ daughter.

Alesso feat. Tove Lo – Heroes

21 Dec

This is flying up the iTunes chart in the UK today and will be Tove’s 2nd smash of the year. Sadly her UK concerts have been postponed twice due to a serious vocal problem which must be a frustrating thing to happen just as you hit your stride popularity wise.

Bertie Blackman – Kingdom of Alone

21 Dec

So it would appear that Bertie Blackman has been making genre-hopping albums for over a decade but is a new name on me. The recommendation came via a very trusted poster on the Popjustice forum. Bertie’s new album The Dash is apparently influenced by the artists she grew up listening to in the 80s like Tears For Fears and The Eurythmics. I am sold. Here’s the video for Kingdom of Alone.

Lady Lamb The Beekeeper – Billions Of Eyes

20 Dec

Another new discovery for me. This young lady is about to release her sophomore album, following her debut Ripley Pine which passed me by completely. I am now playing catch up however and am loving the jangly indie pop sound across the debut album and also found on this first taste of the new album.
