The Midnight – Gloria

31 Dec

The Midnight’s ‘Endless Summer’ ended up very well positioned in my top 50 albums of the year list. This track ‘Gloria’ is from an earlier EP and just got a video treatment from the chap who stars in the clip too – all done in one take amazingly. If you like ‘Endless Summer’ you’re certainly going to want to give ‘Gloria’ a listen too.

Agar Agar – I’m That Guy

31 Dec

For anyone pining for some new music from Italians Do It Better’s Farah (how amazing is ‘Law Of Life’?) the Paris-based duo of Agar Agar might just fill the void. ‘I’m That Guy’ is an epic seven minutes worth of sad indie-synth disco (and rather lively lyrics expletives wise!).

junior a – Sleep Machine

31 Dec

Found this one this morning. Dreamy bit of Grimes-like bedroom laptop electronica. This chap is from Lithuania and has a mixtape on the way called ‘Born Busy’.

Loren North – Feel It Out

30 Dec

Loren’s ‘Starlight’ EP is a bit of a grower (I initially overlooked it but this tune is an earworm). ‘Feel It Out’ has a quality production and I like the piano breakdown halfway through. Ryn Weaver and/or Chelsea Lankes fans may like this one.

Jenn Champion – No One

30 Dec

As it’s all a bit quiet new music wise here’s one I missed from a few months back. ‘No One’ is a bit Italo but with a rather British early 80s vibe to it. Super blend of synths and a more indie sound with Jenn’s slightly detached but spot on vocal sitting perfectly on top.

L’Equipe du Son – Trebuchet

30 Dec

I do love a bit of film or tv dialogue worked into a pop tune. L’Equipe du Son have some very punchy synthwave/electro action happening here on ‘Trebuchet’. This one positively fizzes.

Jessy Lanza – Never Enough (Pitchfork session)

30 Dec

One of the best tracks from an outstanding 2016 album. Jessy goes full on neon disco funk with this live take on one of the many highlights from ‘Oh No’ – here’s ‘Never Enough’.

Courtney Marie Andrews -Put The Fire Out

28 Dec

There’s something in Courtney Marie Andrews’ storytelling which evokes Nanci Griffith and a tone to the voice which is as pure as Joni. With those comparisons in mind I just made another pre-order and will be looking to receiving my copy of ‘Honest Life’ upon its UK release in January. ‘Put The Fire Out’ is a wonderful introduction to this clearly incredible musician.

Julie Byrne – Follow My Voice

28 Dec

Just wow. What a simply divine piece of music. I just rushed to pre-order ‘Not Even Happiness’ – the album from which this comes.  Cat Power, Marissa Nadler, Julia Holter – only the classiest names to mention in the same sentence when comparing this one.

Tiger + Man – Wondering

28 Dec

Whilst it’s all a bit quiet on the new release front it’s a good evening to discover a few tracks which slipped by me earlier in the year. One such track is the brooding but stunning ‘Wondering’ which would sit very nicely next to the tracks posted earlier by Emma Sameth and Chargaux.
