Gemma Cullingford – Tongue Tied/New Day

31 Aug

Sink Ya Teeth’s Maria Uzor was a bubbling ball of energy when we saw her open for LoneLady in Cambridge earlier this year. The other half of the duo, Gemma Cullingford, is getting in on the action with a new solo album arriving later this week. The title track is a throbby bit of soft techno akin to Client or Marie Davidson. Latest single ‘New Day’ lands in the airy whisperered territory of Sarah Nixey. Both tracks have us hooked and we anticipate a rather fizzy bit of electropop across the album when it lands on Friday. The album artwork will make for a stunning poster.

Au Suisse – Control/GC

28 Aug

So yes, we still read Pitchfork reviews. And sometimes that proves very fruitful as was the case yesterday. The new Au Suisse album was sorta on our radar but when the review mentioned Talk Talk, Scritti Politti, Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode we knew we had to investigate properly. It became a stop us in our tracks moment. This album is really rather special. Kelley Polar and Morgan Geist will sit atop many albums of the year lists with this, or at least they should, come December. A masterpiece we think. Such depth across an album makes it hard to choose stand outs but we present ‘Control’ and ‘GC’ to you.

Brooke – Heartbreaker

28 Aug

As much as Eurovision 2022 was a total delight, the one thing missing for us was Brooke Scullion. She totally deserved a place in the grand final with her megapop ‘That’s Rich’. Well, undaunted, she’s clearly aiming high with a stunner of a new sad banger. Her raspy vocal provides a real emotion to ‘Heartbreaker’ and that chorus is colossal.

Mr Little Jeans – Intentions (Georgia Anne Muldrow Remix)

28 Aug

It’s a slightly controversial opinion but we have a very soft spot for Janet Jackson’s ‘Damita Jo’ record – it positively screams summer to us. We hear the influence of that record on Georgia Anne Muldrow’s remix of Mr Little Jean’s ‘Intentions’. Island life beckons with a heat induced haziness when listening to this.

Altered Images – Double Reflection

28 Aug

Clare Grogan’s Altered Images just delivered a long awaited new album called ‘Mascara Streakz’. We’re liking what we are hearing and the immediate standout for us is ‘Double Reflection’. Those Italo disco meets Client indie coolness vibes are floating our boat. Imagine a Purple Disco Machine remix of this!

Cowgirl Clue – Trailblaze

28 Aug

Merge Kacey Musgraves with Charli XCX and we’re certain you’ll land on Cowgirl Clue’s ‘Trailblaze’. Who knew PC Country Music could be a genre – well we think Cowgirl Clue is creating one with this stunning release. Written and produced by the lady herself.

Medicine Cabinet – Factor 50!

26 Aug

Our new favourite band is back with a sonic blast of a sophomore single. ‘Factor 50!’ kicks off like first album era Confidence Man detouring via Wet Leg ear-worminess and then those “alalala” shouts positively scream CSS!! That’s heaps of crazy fun high powered pop references packed in to less than 3 minutes and we are here for it. Live show in Cambridge soon please and let’s make ‘Factor 50!’ the ‘Chaise Longue’ of autumn 2022.

Supathick – Own My Mind

25 Aug

These Aussies have been on our radar for some time and we’ve been enjoying their summery indie bangers. We weren’t expecting ‘Own My Mind’ to be an 80s synthwavey power pop bop but we are embracing this directional change. The production is lush and that’s one diva channeling vocal.

Goldie Boutilier – He Thinks That I’m An Angel

25 Aug

Whether she was Kay, My Name Is Kay or Goldilox we have pretty much fawned over every song this talented artist has released. Now putting music out as Goldie Boutilier, it’s fair to say ‘He Thinks That I’m An Angel’ couldn’t be further removed from Golidlox’s ‘Sex Paranoia’. This newbie is a classic tragic noir ballad with whispers of country and jazz and Goldie’s cute yet cutting vocal crooning sweetly. A melancholic tear jerker and a very welcome return to music for this queen of reinvention.

Aidan Noell featuring Nancy Whang – Sharevari

25 Aug

In the pair year we discovered Nation of Language and in the process made a huge fan out of our pal Ricky Wilde. We didn’t know that Aidan, from Nation of Language, had recorded some solo stuff and so we jumped on this new release from her which also features electronic music scene legend Nancy Whang. We weren’t familiar with the original of ‘Sharevari’ which Aidan describes as a Detroit techno classic. Well we have to say Aidan’s version is sounding pretty special itself – a bit like a lost Farah track for Italians Do It Better with a bit of You Say Party We Say Die about it. An icy techno banger with hints of new wave too.
