Laura Dre – Lost In Transit (Original Mix)

27 Dec

Overnight we have become entirely obsessed with Laura Dre’s concept album ‘Kyoto Dreams’. The album is not meant to be considered a follow up to her ‘Moving Spaces’ album – a regular sophomore album will arrive in 2022. This is very much a unique and stand alone piece and we have fallen under its spell.

The album documents the story of central character Rin – a woman “who lives without dreams and ambitions”. We are huge fans of Sayaka Murata’s ‘Convenience Store Woman’ novel , which we were sure must have influenced ‘Kyoto Dreams’ but a quick on line chat with Laura tells us otherwise (but we hope she now reads it and understands why we made the link!). The album tells Rin’s story in a sequenced order so it’s tricky to highlight a single track out of context (please listen to the whole thing in order through headphones, ideally at night, for a proper immersive experience) but ‘Lost In Transit’ gives you a good flavour of what to expect (could that track be a nod to our most beloved movie, ‘Lost In Translation’?). The album is largely instrumental although it is sprinkled with Japanese spoken word dialogue (the CD booklet has the narration in English as well as Japanese). It’s truly mesmerising.

If you can grab a CD there is to die for artwork and of course an obi strip.

Saucy Lady – Passport To My Love

27 Dec

We discovered Saucy Lady recently thanks to her collaboration with Daddy Squad. She has a tune out on Razor-N-Tape’s new ‘Family Affair Vol. 1’ compilation. ‘Passport To My Love’ is some high end luxury disco with plenty of squelchy electro synths to enjoy as well. A no brainer addition to our delicious Dares Does Disco playlist on Spotify.

Rebecca & Fiona – All The Things She Said

27 Dec

We’ve been checking streaming services religiously awaiting the studio version of Rebecca & Fiona’s cover of ‘I Know There’s Something Going On’ (by Frida) which they performed on Swedish TV earlier in the year. No sign of it as yet but….there is another cover and it’s gorgeous. The ladies’ take on t.A.T.u’s ‘All The Things She Said’ is lit by a late night neon glow and a wall of synths positively explodes as the track ascends.

KVN x Lucian – Burn The Breeze

26 Dec

Synthpop supergroup KVN landed their second single earlier this month (their debut track ‘High and Low’ zoomed straight into our top 100 tracks of the year list and you’ll find KVN member Primo The Alien all over our year end lists) with the release of ‘Burn The Breeze’. A collaboration with producer Lucian, the new single neatly blends Carly Rae Jepsen’s brand of quality pop with Wilson Phillips-esque harmonies and a bit of solo Stevie Nicks at her synthiest to create a sound all of their own.

Teases & Dares – Remix Round Up featuring Lou Hayter, Confidence Man, Baltra and Alivenique

26 Dec

Happy Boxing Day T&D-ers. We hope you had a fun and festive December 25th, however you choose to celebrate/not celebrate! It’s a quiet week for new releases but there are a few recent remixes worth a mention.

Lou Hayter – Check It (Radio Slave Remix)

Fresh from claiming the top spot on our best albums of 2021 run down, Lou Hayter’s ‘Private Sunshine’ is not done just yet. Late in the year we got a deluxe version of the album with remixes and a new track in the shape of ‘Check It’. That track now has its own Radio Slave remix package and goes into trippy sci-fi disco territory which of course is right up our street.

Confidence Man – Holiday (Erol Alkan Rework)

ConMan gave us a top ten track of the year with the fun filled ‘Holiday’ – a single which sounded like pure joy to us. We were even more excited to bag a ticket for their show in Cambridge in May hot on the heels of their sophomore album ‘Tilt’ which comes the month before that gig date. ‘Holiday’ has a rework courtesy of the legend that is Erol Alkan – adding extended laser-fired discohouse power.

Baltra – Baby (Ariel Zetina Remix)

We rushed off to listen to this remix package at the mention of Ariel Zetina. This remix of Baltra’s ‘Baby’ opens gently and begins as a dreamy minimal house cut. The beats kick in eventually for added hypnotic impact.

Alivenique – Tune In (Crush Club Remix)

Alivenique makes her debut on T&D and we found her thanks to Crush Club who we have featured a heap of times. ‘Tune In’ is a chugging banger on the Crush Club rework with flashes of uplifting tropical house too. Alivenique’s album ‘Year of the Statement’ will arrive next year.

Teases & Dares – 2021 Remixed (Top 100 Remixes of the Year)

19 Dec

And so we bring our year end round up to a finale with the really fun one – the best remixes of 2021. This year we think it’s actually a remixed track which would be our favourite piece of music of the year. It’s the song which made us smile, dance and hit the repeat button the most. Congrats to Tom Aspaul, Kim Wilde and Initial Talk for an absolute genius stroke of pop perfection which hits the right note from the get go thanks to Ms Wilde’s adorable giggle. We apply virtually no criteria to this list and so several remixers/artists appear more than once (way to go Initial Talk at numbers one and two).

You’ll note that Mr Aspaul is top and bottom (ahem!) of our list – we thought that an appropriate way to close out the year, with a cheeky (double ahem) nod to album era 2 for Tom which is going to commence on 31 December with his brand new single ‘Let Them (It’s All Love)’. Thanks again T&D readers/listeners. More to come in ’22. As usual, all tunes below collected on a handy little playlist at the bottom of the article.

Teases & Dares – Top 100 Non-LP Tracks of 2021

18 Dec

So here we are again. We have been labouring over our year end best of lists for several weeks but it’s time to finally share what’s been floating our boat in 2021. We are kicking off with the Non-LP tracks list – it’s packed to the rafters with bops, bangers and the occasional mellow moment too. Our rules around this are that the tracks can be stand alone singles, from an EP, from a deluxe reissue of an album (not on original album release), a new track on a Greatest Hits or from a forthcoming album due for release in 2022 (these days there is never a guarantee an album will see the light of day, sadly, so we let these ones in on that basis). We think this list is extra special and in all honesty could have quite easily made it 200 songs. As it stands, the bar is very high so pop on the Spotify playlist and enjoy! As ever, thanks for reading and listening and most importantly supporting the artists included below – they’ve made another very difficult year just that bit more enjoyable.

Haroun – RIDE

15 Dec

Haroun makes their debut on Teases & Dares this evening with the glitterific ‘RIDE’. Imagine Toro Y Moi going full out disco for the NY Ballroom scene and it might end up near here. A sublime and slinky groove and positively zooming onto our Dares Does Disco playlist on Spotify. The brilliantly titled ‘Sexcapades’ EP is on the way very soon. A bonafide breakout star for 2022.

Ruth Radelet – Twilight

15 Dec

One of the saddest stories in pop in 2021 was the demise of The Chromatics. It was Ruth’s voice that was our introduction to the world of Italians Do It Better via the ‘Shining Violence’ release 15 years ago. She makes a break for it as a solo star on the mournful and longing ‘Twilight’ – a dreamy cover of the Elliott Smith track. We must mention the beautifully perfect cover art to match Ruth’s honest and bittersweet vocal. Silver linings and all that.
