Lou Hayter – Frequency

23 May

Back in 2021 Lou Hayter landed the prestigious album of the year accolade on our countdown of the best records of that crazy year. That album, ‘Private Sunshine’, still gets taken out for regular spins at T&D towers but we can’t lie, we’ve been hankering for something new from Lou. Without any sort of build up, brand spanking new music is here in the shape of ‘Frequency’ – accompanied by an announcement of a new record deal with the Greco-Roman label.

We’ve always loved artists who don’t shy away from wearing their musical influences proudly on their sleeves. Now we hope we’re not way off here but ‘Frequency’ is giving us ‘Impossible Princess’-era dark dance Kylie meets Madonna’s ‘Justify My Love’ and for us 80s fans maybe even a touch of The Belle Stars and/or The Fun Boy Three (with Lou’s beloved Grace Jones never far away either). It’s good and proper got us in a trance such is the quality of its hypnotic groove (not to mention the brassy little sax break from Andy McDonnell).

We were super fortunate to catch Lou DJing at the opening of Drumsheds last year (went a bit nuts when she played Chemise’s ‘She Can’t Love You’!) but what we really, really want is to catch a Lou full live show. Very much here for this new musical era and if that leads to an album expect it to be fighting for the best of the year spot yet again.
