The Landing – Outersphere/Just For Fun

3 Feb

The Landing is an artist who has been on our radar for sometime and we’re sure we’ve shown him some playlist love in the past! Somehow those flippin’ algorithms weren’t working for us at the back end of last year when The Landing’s new album ‘Beautiful Human, Beautifully Human’ (ahem) landed. We’ve made up for lost time this Saturday afternoon by hitting the repeat button and we can confirm it’s quite incredible from start to finish with no skips necessary.

There’s a pervading sense of the end of the world and escaping to another galaxy far, far away in the lyrics and song titles. It’s not a morose affair though, offering glimmers of hope that all will be OK. Musically it’s got spacey synths, boogie, gentle funk and heaps more alongside some smooth vocals. By about our fifth listen ‘Outersphere’ really got us good – we realised that it has been a single previously and were not prepared for the breathtaking artwork (see the bandcamp link below). The track is like Gotye meets Yatte/Duett (on their collaboration record) with a hint of Au Suisse’s masterpiece from 2022. Lyrically it’s poetic, poignant and brilliant;

“This is how the story goes, the more you learn the less you know
Hold on just to let it go, wander and you’ll make it home so
I won’t be here this time next year,
You’re looking at the engineer, all aboard the outersphere
Beautiful, beautifully human being”

These words really stopped us in our tracks and we paused to properly appreciate them (thanks The Landing for including them on the bandcamp page for the single).

We’ve also shared ‘Just For Fun’ which commences with an invitation to “take off for the stars” suggesting a form of escapism we might all be craving based upon the state of the world right now. The production is silky and offers a bit of warm disco/yacht pop (there’s even a reference to the “pale blue ocean” – unclear if referencing a coastal poolside vibe or indeed the sea of tranquility!).

The Landing’s ‘Beautiful Human, Beautifully Human’ is out now wherever you stream/download. In the words of ‘Just For Fun’ we encourage you to “…get lost and find your (our) way”
