PYN – Beat Drama/Slow It Down (Disco Edit)

14 Oct

We’ve experienced a stop everything you’re doing and immerse yourself in a new musical find moment this morning! A certain streaming service was earning it’s fee earlier today by signposting us to a new album called ‘Beat Drama’ by a Dutch artist going by PYN (the pop moniker of Pien Breeuwsma). You know how we love a good song title so we jumped in on the album track ‘You’re Gone When The Sun Goes Up” and we haven’t regretted that decision nor caught our breath since!

We’re on full listen number 3 but can say with certainty ‘Beat Drama’, as a record, is going to feature in our albums of the year run down later in 2023. It ticks so many of our pop boxes in terms of vocals, synths, boppiness and quality of melody.

On tracks like ‘Hold You For Life’ Italo disco makes an appearance as the song swells in its closing stages. The title track gives you the best indication of what to expect across the ten song set and gets proper funky towards the back end. We were going to be lazy and suggest PYN is Dutch Dua but we’re not going there – this is a self produced album and therefore PYN has more in common with synthpop princesses Primo The Alien or Beca. PYN is indeed a one woman pop factory powerhouse and we appear to have jumped on board on a good day with the artist releasing a Disco Edit of ‘Slow It Down’ yesterday which has also become an instant favourite.

For fans of physcial products there’s a rather stunning purple vinyl (we have nabbed one this morning!) on PYN’s Bandcamp page. On that very page PYN describes ‘Beat Drama’ as “the thin line in life between dancing and crying” – we just LOVE that. It’s synthpop with a pulsating emotional heartbeat.

We’ve selected the ‘Beat Drama’ title track and the aforementioned ‘Slow It Down (Disco Edit)’ for your listening pleasure below but trust us it’s an album purchase you need not hesitate over.
