Darren Hayes returned to music big style this past week with the release of his long awaited ‘Homosexual’ album. First things first we absolutely LOVE the song lengths on this album – a total two fingered salute to those who insist on a two minute duration to satisfy TikTokkers – shove that! It also encourages this album to be heard as a full body of work. We are hearing the early promo singles in a different light in the context of the album – indeed they all sound better for it. Of the new tracks it’s the two-part title track that has really grabbed us – they feel like a response to the clubbier moments on George Michael’s ‘Faith’ album. The finale to Act One is entirely euphoric. Darren’s unabashed adoration for Madonna is apparent on another highlight – this being ‘Hey Matt’ which perhaps takes a sonic nod from ‘American Life’ (top three Madonna album wise for us!). The music scene is better for having Darren Hayes in it and he’s still got so much to say. Bring on the tour (secretly hoping that ‘Casey’ makes the setlist).
