ELSKA – Summer Romance Movie

This Aussie pop siren has well and truly delivered the boppery in 2022. The previous pair of singles (see ‘Golden’ and ‘Body Work’) in particular have been of the highest quality and such that many of the big pop girls only wish they had come up with something as effortlessly good (looking at you Pink and Katy Perry). There is a delightful charm to ELSKA’s voice and indeed about her whole approach to pop music.

‘Summer Romance Movie’ completes her year in music and it’s a nostalgic candyfloss cloud of loveliness. It’s a perfect companion to the aforementioned tracks and seals the deal as one of the best singles runs of any artist this year. The problem ELSKA has posed for us is which of her outstanding tracks will we choose for our best non LP tracks of the year top 100 (self imposed rule of only one per artist – else, to be fair, it would be an ELSKA fest!!).

Here at Teases & Dares we’ve been raving on about ELSKA’s pure pop bops all year. She’s gone full out orchestral disco on her latest ‘Golden’ and it might just be her best yet. That crystal clear voice alongside seductive strings and a giant pop hook make this a total winner.

ELSKA – Body Work

We found ELSKA via her ‘Stupid Things’ which was a burst of pop joy. That tune was no fluke and she goes even bigger with ‘Body Work’. That honeyed voice smooths over a taut 80s sophisti-funk strut and it dabbles in disco too! It’s got a proper song structure and the build and finale really deliver. Glittery gorgeousness in the single artwork too.

More Aussie pop nutrition for you this weekend. ELSKA is new to us but we have a sense she’s a mistress of gimmick free quality pop tunes based upon the tremendous ‘Stupid Things’. There’s a warm and husky tone to her vocals and a gentle funk to the pop sounds on this boppy new single.

Teases & Dares’ Top 100 Non-LP Tracks of 2022

We wrap our review of the year with our final best of list for 2022. This one is always a favourite. It brings together the best tracks which weren’t on an album. There are a few self imposed rules (one per artist in the main but collabs/features are allowed which makes this a bit of a Bunny X/Anniee fest for which I am not the slightest bit sorry – the songs can be from albums which are due in 2023 because you just never know if an album will ever see the light of day).

As per usual the list is very upbeat but there is a smattering of ballads, moody chilled tunes and the occasional surprise to balance things out.

In fairness we could have included about 5 Rose Gray songs and she had better be the biggest pop star on the planet in 2023. Thanks to anyone who checked in with the blog, listened to a playlist and got in touch. As always if you like what you hear, buy a tune from Bandcamp or iTunes or if you are in a position to do so purchase a physical product – it makes the world of difference to these artists.
