NINA & Radio Wolf – Don’t Trust The Night/Live Review – Hotline Part Deux, Bristol 8 June 2024

9 Jun

It’s been a rather large weekend if you’re a NINA & Radio Wolf fan. In addition to releasing the fourth in the sequence of their collaborative singles, ‘Don’t Trust The Night’ (more about that in a minute), they also returned to UK shores for a stunning live performance at Hotline Part Deux alongside other synthwave royalty. Fresh from supporting Cannons on their European tour, NINA & Radio Wolf appear to have gained confidence in a short space of time based upon their exquisite set last night.

The four recent singles sounded truly cohesive together with ‘Tokyo Cowboy’ being the perfect opener for the set. The chemistry between the pair makes it look rather effortless up there – each giving the other space to shine, knowing when to step up and when to elevate their musical partner. This being a synthwave festival it was only right that a couple of NINA classics made an appearance. The anthemic ‘Synthian’ was given a bit of Radio Wolf attitude and ‘Automatic Call’ remains legendary especially with an empassioned vocal delivery from NINA.

There was an extra special surprise with NINA paying due respect to the Teases & Dares album of the year for 2023 – this being the Ricky Wilde X NINA masterpiece that is ‘Scala Hearts’. Appropriately the Radio Wolf remix of ‘Causeway’ was the track included and it was a beautiful moment of serenity amidst the synth rock barrage of bops and bangers we were treated to.

Two further unreleased NINA & Radio Wolf tracks rounded out the set. ‘To See You’ and ‘Lost In This Forever’ appear to be another ideally matched pair of tracks – perhaps the next one/two shot following the pattern of the first four singles.

Now back to the new single ‘ Don’t Trust The Night’. It’s a spooky dark lullaby with NINA purring in the opening lines, seductively encouraging you to “enter through the labyrinth”. The striking cover art is pure ‘LA Confidential’ but it’s unclear who is the target and who is in pursuit (that font looks about to drip with fresh blood). Or perhaps NINA & Radio Wolf are a modern day Bonnie & Clyde, conspiring together to master the ultimate heist. Our bet is on NINA being the femme fatale – we just hope she’s gentle with the wolf.
