King IV – See You Later/Motion/The Underground

3 Nov

Earlier this week we put the finishing touches to what we thought was our year end list of the best albums of 2023. Then, midweek, along came King IV’s ‘Psychopomp’ (perfectly timed for Halloween) and blew the whole thing wide open. If you lean towards dark and dirty electropop akin to Slayyyter but also the spiky metallic bubblegum of Poppy then you are going to ADORE this record.

It’s only right that a song called ‘The Underground’ sounds like Girls Aloud covering The Distillers. Fans of short lived mid-2000s pop princess Jentina will find ‘See You Later’ sharing musical DNA with ‘Bad Ass Strippa’ and ‘French Kisses’ – it’s an attitude laden sung/rapped sugary pop behemoth with a thumping electro beat. ‘Motion’ meanwhile crunches up a heap of Kylie eras (the lyrics even mention the locomotion!) for a hands in the air/call to the dancefloor banger.

‘Psychopomp’ is out now and see below for the 3 tracks mentioned above which should be more than enough to convince you a pop star has arrived.
