Michaela May – You & I

24 Feb

We are big fans of Michaela May’s massive pop hooks – see ‘1954’ and ‘Lights Out’ for further evidence. New tune ‘You & I’ continues the trend with a huge Europop chorus, an unexpected sax solo and in her lower register there’s something a wee bit Tina Arena-ish going on.

Niki & The Dove – Sushi King

24 Feb

After two stunning albums, Niki & The Dove surprise us with a new single. It’s not clear if this is an outtake from album number two, the start of a new album era or simply a one off single release. It’s good stuff of course.

Violet Sands – Hello, I’m Free

24 Feb

It’s Hercules and Love Affair meets New Young Pony Club and a hint of Glass Candy for the new offering from Deidre and The Dark/French Horn Rebellion side project Violet Sands. These guys dropped a smashing EP last year and this new track keeps up their quality run.

Claude Violante – Like That

24 Feb

Claude Violante has an EP named ‘Road Race’ on the way and from that here’s ‘Like That’ which is a supreme slice of sophisticated French pop.

Superbody – Falling 4 U

24 Feb

This is right up my street. Computerised sci fi synths, DINNER-esque way deep vocals and a proper retro video to boot. The album ‘Youth City’ arrives at the end of March.

Sarah Sellers – Is This Letting Go

24 Feb

There is such a natural, effortless feel to Sarah’s voice – nothing forced or strained, just pure and controlled emotion. ‘Is This Letting Go’ is a lovely sad banger and it really takes flight as the song progresses.

Sui Zhen – Hangin’ On

24 Feb

Sui Zhen brings her ‘Secretly Susan’ album era to a close with the release of a video for ‘Hangin’ On’. For those not already familiar with the album it’s a perfect pastel coloured pop record.

Memoryy – Turn It Up

24 Feb

No not the Michael Davidson song from the Who’s That Girl soundtrack although this is indeed 80s indebted. Our fella Memoryy can do no wrong right now as he leads us towards his new album ‘Skeletons’ in March. There’s a bit of Climie Fisher, some Michael Sembello and a healthy dollop of St Lucia on this wonky pop classic in the making.

Thomas Azier – Gold

24 Feb

Earlier this week Thomas announced his new album ‘Rouge’ which will arrive in May. Today we get to hear album taster number three and it lives up to its title – it is indeed pure ‘Gold’. Commencing as a piano ballad it bursts into flame at the chorus which is the best thing Hurts have never done. Roll on May monsieur!

Bränna – On The Go

24 Feb

So she’s back! And so is Varum who was also involved with the previous single. ‘On The Go’ is serving vintage Client feels – that dark Euro techno feel and I just LOVE the little spoken word sections. Delicious pop music!
